ICC Learned a Big Lesson from The Final Drama

ICC learned a big lesson from the final drama

KARACHI: ICC has learned a big lesson from the final drama of World Cup 2019 as boundaries will not count for tie breakers this time.

The final played in England in 2019 ended in a very controversial manner, in which England was declared the winner against New Zealand, after the match was tied, the super over also remained equal due to the boundaries made by both teams. It was calculated that the English team was ahead, which led to them being declared champions, much to the dismay of Kiwi fans.

Unlike in 2019, boundaries will not count for tiebreakers, with multiple overs possible. Photo: Express Web

Taking a lesson from this controversy, this time the ICC clarified that not only the knockout, but if the score is equal in all matches, then there will be a super over, if the score is equal in this too, then there will be another super over. In this way, the series can continue until the winning side is determined.

Like the last World Cup, this time also all the teams will play 9 matches in the preliminary stage, 2 points for victory and 1 point for no decision, top 4 teams will play semi-final, if 2 or more sides are equal in points. Then only the teams with better run rate will be able to participate in the knockout match. A reserve day has also been set aside for semi-finals and finals.

It should be remembered that the World Cup in India is starting on Thursday, the finalist teams of the last mega event, England and New Zealand, will compete in the opening match. will

PSL: Demand for Policy on Surrogate Advertising

Title: PSL and the Growing Demand for a Policy on Surrogate Advertising

KARACHI: PSL franchisees have demanded a policy on surrogate advertising. In the governing council meeting, the matter of surrogate advertising was also considered during the PSL. In the eighth edition, most of the teams had put logos of certain companies on their shirts, whose real business was being declared as gambling.

Introduction

The Pakistan Super League (PSL) has become a cultural phenomenon in Pakistan, capturing the hearts of cricket enthusiasts across the nation. Beyond the thrilling cricketing action, the PSL has also been a platform for brands to promote their products and services. However, in recent years, concerns have arisen regarding the use of surrogate advertising in the league. Surrogate advertising refers to the promotion of banned or restricted products through the promotion of another unrelated product. This article explores the issues surrounding surrogate advertising in the PSL and the growing demand for a comprehensive policy to regulate it.

The PSL: More than Just Cricket:

Since its inception in 2015, the PSL has grown to become one of the most popular T20 cricket leagues in the world. It has not only showcased top-notch cricketing talent but has also provided a unique blend of entertainment, music, and fan engagement. The league's success has attracted significant investment from various brands looking to tap into the massive viewership and fanbase. Multan Sultans captain Muhammad Rizwan had hidden the sponsor logo on his shirt with a sticker in the qualifier match, the franchises want no such situation to happen for which the PCB has been asked to formulate a clear policy.

Advertising in the PSL:

Advertising is an integral part of any major sports league, and the PSL is no exception. Brands have recognized the PSL's potential as a platform to reach a diverse and engaged audience. As a result, they have poured significant resources into advertising during PSL matches, making it a lucrative market for advertisers.

However, a concerning trend has emerged in recent years – surrogate advertising. Surrogate advertising involves the promotion of products indirectly by advertising unrelated products. In the context of the PSL, this often means brands using the league as a platform to promote products that are banned or restricted by law, such as alcoholic beverages or tobacco products.

The Surrogate Advertising Challenge:

Surrogate advertising is a complex issue with various dimensions. On one hand, it allows brands to circumvent laws and restrictions on the promotion of certain products, thereby undermining public health and safety efforts. On the other hand, it can be argued that banning surrogate advertising altogether might infringe on the rights of companies to advertise their legal products and services.

In the case of the PSL, surrogate advertising has taken multiple forms. For instance, brands have used PSL matches as a backdrop to promote alcoholic beverages by prominently displaying their logos and slogans on players' jerseys, stadium boards, and even during broadcast advertisements. While the sale and consumption of alcohol are regulated and restricted in Pakistan, the association with a popular sports league allows these brands to indirectly market their products.

Similarly, tobacco companies have used PSL matches to promote smokeless tobacco products. The use of such products is a known health hazard, and their advertising is banned in many countries, including Pakistan. However, through surrogate advertising tactics, these products have managed to gain visibility during PSL matches.

The Public Health Concern:

One of the primary concerns surrounding surrogate advertising in the PSL is its impact on public health. Pakistan, like many other countries, has stringent regulations in place to limit the advertising and consumption of tobacco and alcohol. These regulations are driven by a genuine concern for the health and well-being of the population, as both tobacco and excessive alcohol consumption are linked to a range of serious health issues, including cancer, cardiovascular diseases, and addiction.

Stop teams from hiding players' logos, advice to give the money for free tickets to the board itself (Photo: Express Web)

He got the reply that the policy is already there, documents should be submitted to prove that the sponsoring company has nothing to do with the gambling business, such companies will be allowed to sponsor, those who cannot submit the documents. Fearing a possible backlash from the players, board officials asked the franchises to convince them themselves.

The presence of these products, even indirectly, during PSL matches can send mixed messages to the public. It can normalize the consumption of these products and make them appear socially acceptable, especially to young and impressionable viewers. This goes against the spirit of public health campaigns and efforts to curb tobacco and alcohol use.

The Ethical Dimension:

Beyond the legal and public health concerns, surrogate advertising in the PSL also raises ethical questions. Cricket is a sport that has a massive influence on the culture and values of society. It is a game that is followed by millions, including impressionable youth who look up to cricketers as role models. When cricket becomes a medium for promoting products that are detrimental to health, it sends a troubling message.

It was answered that the players signed a central contract with the board, which prevented them from refusing to advertise for authorized companies.

Cricketers, as ambassadors of the sport, also bear some responsibility. Many cricketing legends enjoy celebrity status, and their endorsements carry significant weight. When they endorse products or wear logos during matches that indirectly promote harmful substances, they inadvertently become a part of the problem.

The Growing Demand for a Policy:

Given the multifaceted challenges posed by surrogate advertising in the PSL, there is a growing demand for a comprehensive policy to regulate and address these issues. The key stakeholders in this debate include the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), advertisers, sponsors, government authorities, and the public. Here are some key points of discussion:

1. Transparency: There is a call for transparency in sponsorship deals and advertising agreements between the PSL and brands. This includes disclosing any indirect promotion of banned or restricted products.

2. Stricter Enforcement of Regulations: Existing regulations on the advertising of tobacco and alcohol need to be strictly enforced during PSL matches. This includes monitoring and penalizing violations.

3. Public Awareness Campaigns: Public health organizations and government bodies can run campaigns to educate the public about the dangers of surrogate advertising and its impact on society.

4. Cricketer Accountability: Cricketers can play a role by carefully considering the brands they endorse and raising ethical concerns when necessary.

5. Clear Guidelines: The PCB could establish clear guidelines on the types of brands and products that can be associated with the PSL, ensuring they align with public health and ethical standards.

Conclusion

The issue of surrogate advertising in the Pakistan Super League is a complex and multifaceted challenge that requires careful consideration and action. While advertisers seek to promote their products, it is essential to balance their interests with public health, ethical concerns, and the cultural impact of cricket. A well-thought-out policy, involving all stakeholders, can strike this balance and ensure that the PSL remains a celebration of cricket, entertainment, and positive values while safeguarding the well-being of the public.

CWC23; India Issued Visas to Pakistan Cricket Team

Title: India Issues Visas to Pakistan Cricket Team for the 2023 World Cup: A Gesture of Sportsmanship

The Pakistan team is scheduled to leave for India via Dubai on Tuesday and Wednesday night. The World Cup 2023 festival will be held in India from October 5 to November 19.

Introduction

In the world of sports, cricket stands as one of the most passionate and fiercely competitive games. It is a sport that unites nations and ignites passions like no other. While cricket rivalries often transcend the boundaries of the cricket field, they are also a testament to the power of the sport to bring people together. In a remarkable display of sportsmanship and diplomacy, India issued visas to the Pakistan cricket team for the 2023 World Cup, signaling a positive step towards fostering goodwill and strengthening cricketing ties between the two nations. In this article, we will delve into the significance of this move and its potential impact on the sport and bilateral relations.

The Historical Context:

India and Pakistan share a tumultuous history, marred by conflicts and political tensions. This history has inevitably spilled over into the world of sports, with cricket often bearing the brunt of these tensions. Cricket matches between India and Pakistan have been high-stakes affairs, both on and off the field. However, despite the political differences and historical animosities, cricket has managed to maintain its status as a unifying force among the people of both nations.

The Cricketing Rivalry:

The cricketing rivalry between India and Pakistan is one of the most intense and anticipated clashes in the world of sports. Matches between the two teams are watched by millions of fans globally, with emotions running high on both sides. The atmosphere in the stadiums during these matches is electric, with fans cheering their teams with unbridled passion. However, this rivalry has also led to unfortunate incidents and controversies over the years, with political and diplomatic tensions often spilling onto the cricket field.

The Diplomatic Challenge:

In this backdrop, the decision by India to issue visas to the Pakistan cricket team for the 2023 World Cup is a significant diplomatic gesture. It signals a willingness to separate politics from sports and prioritize the spirit of competition and camaraderie. This move has been hailed by cricket enthusiasts, sports analysts, and diplomats alike as a step in the right direction.

India has issued visas to the Pakistan cricket team to participate in the World Cup 2023. The visas for the Pakistani team were approved hours after the PCB sent a letter to the ICC. The Pakistan team has been granted visas less than 48 hours before departure.

Before the World Cup, the Pakistani team will play two warm-up matches against New Zealand on September 29 and Australia on October 3. Pakistan team will play their first match in the World Cup on October 6 against Netherlands.

The Impact on Cricket:

The issuance of visas to the Pakistan cricket team holds immense importance for the sport itself. Cricket has always been a game that thrives on competition and rivalries. When two teams with historic animosities face each other on the field, it not only raises the level of excitement but also showcases the beauty of sportsmanship. Cricket fans worldwide eagerly anticipate India-Pakistan encounters, and the presence of both teams at the 2023 World Cup ensures that this spectacle continues.

Furthermore, the participation of the Pakistan cricket team in the World Cup adds to the tournament's diversity and competitiveness. Cricket is at its best when it brings together teams from different nations, each with its unique playing style and strengths. The presence of Pakistan ensures that the World Cup is a truly global event, where cricket fans from all over the world can witness top-quality matches.

Moreover, the Indian and Pakistani cricket teams have a storied history of producing some of the game's greatest talents. From Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid to Wasim Akram and Inzamam-ul-Haq, these players have left an indelible mark on the sport. The rivalry has often produced moments of cricketing brilliance that are etched in the memory of fans. The 2023 World Cup offers an opportunity for a new generation of cricketers to create their own memorable moments.

The Diplomatic Message:

Beyond the realm of sports, India's decision to issue visas to the Pakistan cricket team sends a message of goodwill and diplomacy. It signifies that, despite the political differences and historical conflicts, both nations can find common ground and cooperation through sports. Cricket has the power to transcend borders and foster friendships among players and fans alike. By allowing Pakistan to participate in the World Cup, India is demonstrating its commitment to this principle.

The move also highlights the importance of sports diplomacy in modern international relations. Sports can act as a bridge between nations, facilitating dialogue and understanding. It provides an opportunity for people from different countries to come together and share a common passion. The spirit of sportsmanship can help ease tensions and pave the way for constructive engagement on other fronts.

The Potential for Bilateral Relations:

While the issuance of visas for the Pakistan cricket team is primarily a cricketing decision, it has the potential to positively influence bilateral relations between India and Pakistan. Sports have, in the past, played a role in thawing diplomatic tensions between nations. The famous "Ping Pong Diplomacy" between the United States and China in the 1970s is a prime example of how sports can be a catalyst for dialogue and cooperation.

Although cricket alone cannot resolve the complex political issues between India and Pakistan, it can create an atmosphere of goodwill and open the door to more constructive discussions. It is worth noting that cricketing relations between the two nations have had their ups and downs, with periods of suspension and resumption. However, the recent move by India to issue visas can be seen as a positive step towards maintaining a stable cricketing relationship, which, in turn, can contribute to improved overall relations.

The Role of Cricketing Authorities:

Cricketing authorities in both India and Pakistan also play a crucial role in ensuring that the sport remains a vehicle for diplomacy and goodwill. They need to foster an environment of respect and fair play both on and off the field. This includes promoting cultural exchanges, facilitating tours, and encouraging cricketing ties.

In recent years, there have been instances where cricketing authorities from both nations have engaged in discussions to revive bilateral cricketing ties. While political factors have often disrupted these plans, the willingness of cricket boards to engage in dialogue is a positive sign. Continued efforts by these authorities can help ensure that cricket remains a unifying force between India and Pakistan.

Conclusion

The issuance of visas to the Pakistan cricket team for the 2023 World Cup is a significant and welcome development in the world of cricket. It exemplifies the power of sports to transcend political boundaries and promote goodwill between nations. Cricket has the ability to bring people together, and this move by India sets a positive precedent for the future.

While the political and diplomatic challenges between India and Pakistan are complex and longstanding, sports can serve as a stepping stone towards improved relations. Cricket has the potential to bridge divides and foster dialogue, both at the official level and among the people of both nations.

As the cricketing world eagerly anticipates the 2023 World Cup, fans can look forward to witnessing high-stakes matches between India and Pakistan. Beyond the rivalry, these matches represent an opportunity for both nations to come together in the spirit of sportsmanship and celebrate the beauty of the game. The issuance of visas to the Pakistan cricket team is a step in the right direction, and it is our hope that it paves the way for a brighter future, both in cricket and in the broader context of bilateral relations.

Introduction

After Pakistan's former fast bowler Muhammad Asif criticized Babar Azam, the national captain's father also reacted. Former fast bowler Muhammad Asif made many statements in the 'X' space session on Friday night which were no less than a surprise for cricket fans. Mohammad Asif also criticized the Green Shirts squad for World Cup 2023 and said that our squad has all average fast bowlers, none of them are special. Mohammad Asif claimed that “I got Babar Azam selected in the ZTBL trials, you can ask his father.”Babar Azam is one of the best batsmen but he puts pressure on Rizwan by playing too many dot balls."

In the world of cricket, controversies are not uncommon, and they often arise from comments and criticisms made by former players and pundits. Recently, Pakistan's cricketing landscape was hit by a storm when former cricketer Mohammad Asif made some critical comments about Babar Azam, the current captain of the Pakistan national cricket team. What made this controversy even more intriguing was the subsequent reaction from Babar Azam's father, who staunchly defended his son. In this article, we delve into the controversy, the nature of Mohammad Asif's comments, and the passionate response from Babar Azam's father.

The Critique by Mohammad Asif:

It all began when Mohammad Asif, a former Pakistani fast bowler known for his exceptional skills with the ball, made critical remarks about Babar Azam's captaincy and batting style during a television show. Asif questioned Babar's ability to lead the team effectively and suggested that his batting lacked the aggression needed in modern-day cricket.

Asif's comments sparked a significant debate among cricket enthusiasts and experts, with many expressing their opinions on social media platforms and in sports discussions. Some believed that Asif's critique was valid, while others defended Babar Azam's leadership and batting prowess. Mohammad Asif also said that "Even today I can bowl Babar Azam madden over in T20 cricket. If you give Babar Azam good balls, he cannot take a shot".

On the other hand, Babar Azam's father made a post on Instagram after Muhammad Asif's statement in which he said that Babar's first salary of Rs 16,800 helped Babar to move forward. First of all, this time will never come, even if it comes, out of respect for Babar, you (Muhammad Asif) will be played over-maiden in any case, because your timely testimony was of great use to us.

Babar Azam's Rise to Stardom:

Before delving deeper into the controversy, it is essential to understand the context surrounding Babar Azam's career. Babar is often regarded as one of Pakistan's most promising talents, with a batting style that combines elegance, precision, and a knack for playing match-winning innings. His journey from a young cricketer in Lahore to becoming the captain of the national team is a testament to his hard work and talent.

It ended here. According to Azam Siddiqui, 'When Babar came to play the Under-16 World Cup, there used to be a club school of cricket next to the DPS Model Town Ground, and Babar's club had a match with that club. Back was preparing, he played this match, Babar used to open, Mohammad Asif attacked, Babar made 84 in that match and Asif dismissed him, well the innings ended, Babar came out with great patience and told my inquiry that Asif Bhai has said very bad things, I consoled him and said that you have also hit him for 11 fours, well the matter has ended here.

Babar's batting record in all formats of the game speaks for itself. He has consistently been among the top run-scorers for Pakistan and has been compared to some of the game's legends due to his ability to adapt to various formats. His calm and composed demeanor on the field has earned him respect and admiration from fans and fellow cricketers alike.

The Captaincy Challenge:

Babar Azam's appointment as the captain of the Pakistan national cricket team was a significant milestone in his career. However, leading a cricket team, especially a team as passionate and demanding as Pakistan, comes with its own set of challenges. As the captain, Babar not only has to perform consistently with the bat but also navigate the complex dynamics of a diverse team, manage expectations, and make strategic decisions on the field.

Azam Siddiqui further said that 'Honorable Mansoor Rana helped Babar to play for ZTBL. Babar's trial was going on at the National Academy. When Muhammad Asif came, the trial had not even started. At that time, Babar was wearing pads. Babar said that Asif Bhai is on trial for the bank, at that time he went to the bank administration and said in a very harsh tone, what are you doing for his trial? Write down his name and keep it in the bank, it will be of great use to you'.

Criticism is a part and parcel of leadership in cricket, and captains often find themselves under the microscope, with every decision scrutinized. It is within this context that Mohammad Asif's critique of Babar Azam's captaincy must be understood.

Babar Azam's Father Speaks Out:

In response to Mohammad Asif's criticism, Babar Azam's father, Azam Siddique, came forward to defend his son. Siddique expressed his disappointment with Asif's comments and questioned his credibility as a critic, given Asif's own troubled past, which included a doping ban.

Siddique's defense of his son was not just a protective fatherly instinct but also an assertion of Babar's credentials as a captain and a batsman. He emphasized Babar's commitment to the game and his dedication to leading the team with integrity.

Siddique also highlighted Babar's achievements and contributions to Pakistan cricket, pointing out that his son had been the backbone of the team's batting lineup for years. He defended Babar's leadership skills, stating that his son was a work in progress and that he had the full support of the team and the Pakistan Cricket Board.

The Role of Criticism in Cricket:

Criticism has always been a part of the cricketing world, and it serves a purpose in the sport's development. Former players and pundits offer their insights and opinions, which can be valuable for the growth of individual players and the team as a whole. However, criticism should be constructive, fair, and based on a deep understanding of the game.

In the case of Babar Azam, the controversy raised questions about the manner in which criticism is delivered. While players and captains are expected to handle criticism gracefully, it is equally important for former players and pundits to express their views in a respectful and professional manner.

The Controversy's Impact on Babar Azam:

The controversy surrounding Mohammad Asif's comments and Babar Azam's father's response undoubtedly had an impact on the young captain. Babar has always maintained a calm and composed demeanor on and off the field, and this incident was a test of his mental resilience.

The scrutiny and pressure of leading the national team, combined with public criticism, can be mentally taxing for any cricketer. However, Babar's ability to weather this storm and stay focused on his game is a testament to his character and his commitment to improving as a leader and a batsman.

Conclusion

Cricket, like any other sport, is subject to controversies and debates. Players, both current and former, have a role to play in shaping the narrative of the game. It is essential for cricketing personalities to remember that their words carry weight and can influence public opinion.

As for Babar Azam, his journey as a cricketer and a captain is far from over. He will continue to face challenges, criticisms, and expectations, but his determination and talent suggest that he has a bright future ahead. The controversy surrounding Mohammad Asif's comments and the impassioned response from Babar Azam's father are just chapters in the ongoing saga of Pakistan cricket, a saga that continues to captivate fans and enthusiasts around the world.

The Genesis of the Dispute:

The central contract dispute in Pakistan cricket had been simmering for a while before it came to a boil. It was a situation that had the potential to affect the morale and performance of the national team. The dispute revolved around several key issues, including player remuneration, the selection process, and the power dynamics between the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and the players. The situation became increasingly tense as players expressed their frustration and dissatisfaction publicly.

Star cricketers and Inzamam-ul-Haq's agents are the same, they can convince them, the biggest demand of the players is some percentage of PCB's revenue, he gives examples of Australia and India where It happens, but there is no such tradition in Pakistan, it doesn't seem easy to do all this so soon, the board had offered to pay 45 lakh rupees per month to the A category cricketers, but they are not happy with it. Amidst the growing tension and disgruntlement among the players, the need for a peacemaker was evident. Inzamam-ul-Haq, a figure respected not only for his cricketing prowess but also for his calm and composed demeanor, was the perfect choice for this role. His appointment as a mediator was widely welcomed by both the players and the PCB.

Inzamam-ul-Haq began his efforts to convince the angry players by initiating one-on-one discussions with each member of the team. His approach was rooted in empathy, understanding, and a genuine desire to resolve the issues at hand. He listened attentively to their grievances, acknowledging their concerns, and assuring them that their voices would be heard.

One of the key elements of Inzamam's approach was to maintain transparency throughout the process. He ensured that players were informed about the intricacies of the central contract system, the financial constraints faced by the PCB, and the challenges of balancing the interests of players, administrators, and the fans.

Inzamam-ul-Haq also emphasized the importance of unity within the team. He reminded the players that the success of Pakistan cricket was contingent on their collective efforts and that internal disputes would only weaken their position on the international stage. This appeal to patriotism and team spirit resonated with many players who began to see the bigger picture.

Negotiating a Fair Deal:

One of the central issues in the dispute was player remuneration. Inzamam-ul-Haq played a pivotal role in negotiating a fair and transparent payment structure that addressed the concerns of the players while also taking into account the financial constraints of the PCB. He ensured that performance-based incentives were included in the contracts, giving players a tangible motivation to excel on the field.

Sources say that the board may consider further increase in fees or paying the tax itself, four months dues will also be offered to be paid immediately. However, now there is an intention to refuse to put the sponsor's logo on the shirt, they may also refuse to participate in promotional activities, etc. However, Inzamam-ul-Haq will not let the issue go to this level, a big breakthrough is expected soon in this regard, the players themselves also want a solution to the problem, but some people on the board are playing a "double game".

On his behalf, some players were told that the current chairman of the management committee himself does not know how long he will remain in office, so no deal should be made. Only the cricketers are complaining about the behavior of some officials. Babar Azam seemed very satisfied, he felt that the head of the board was serious about solving the problems. Inzamam-ul-Haq was also angered by the behavior of some board officials and almost forced him to resign, but Zaka Ashraf took over the affairs.

Inzamam-ul-Haq also advocated for a more consultative selection process. He proposed the establishment of a selection committee that would include input from both the selectors and the players. This move aimed to create a more inclusive and democratic system where players felt that their opinions were valued.

Power Dynamics and Accountability:

Addressing the power dynamics within the PCB was another critical aspect of Inzamam-ul-Haq's mediation efforts. He stressed the importance of transparency and accountability within the organization. He recommended the establishment of a player's association that would act as a bridge between the players and the PCB, ensuring that their concerns were heard at the administrative level.

Inzamam-ul-Haq also urged the PCB to be more responsive to the needs of the players. This included providing better facilities, medical support, and psychological counseling to help players cope with the pressures of international cricket.

The Road to Resolution:

Inzamam-ul-Haq's efforts were not without challenges. There were moments of tension and disagreement during the negotiations. However, his unwavering commitment to finding common ground and his ability to empathize with the players' perspectives eventually led to a breakthrough.

The central contract dispute that had threatened to tear Pakistan cricket apart was finally resolved through a mutually agreed-upon contract that incorporated many of Inzamam-ul-Haq's recommendations. The players were content with the revised payment structure and the inclusion of performance-based incentives. The establishment of a more consultative selection process and the players association also provided players with a sense of empowerment and representation.

Conclusion

Inzamam-ul-Haq's role in resolving the central contract dispute in Pakistan cricket serves as a shining example of how effective mediation can bring about positive change in the world of sports. His ability to bridge the gap between the players and the PCB, his emphasis on transparency and accountability, and his unwavering commitment to the betterment of Pakistan cricket played a pivotal role in restoring harmony within the team.

It serves as a reminder that even in the midst of heated confrontations, the values of sportsmanship, mutual respect, and a genuine desire for the betterment of the game can prevail.
